In looking back over 2009, Tadashi Iwasawa, president of Riken Keiki commented, "It was just a run of difficult situations." Their business results had been good through the first half of 2008, but then during the last half the effects of the global economic slump dealt a direct blow to the market for gas detectors for industrial use. Ranging from the electronics industry involving semiconductors and LCDs to iron and steel, chemicals, and petroleum, capital investment in all areas of industry suddenly cooled off on a global scale.
