TNK-BP pays $1.8 billion for BP's Vietnam and Venezuela assets

Russia's TNK-BP and UK-based major BP on Monday announced an agreement for TNK-BP to acquire BP's upstream and pipeline assets in Vietnam and Venezuela for $1.8 billion. BP said in July that it would sell non-core oil and gas assets worth $30 billion over the next 18 months in order to help cover the costs of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April this year (See Gas Matters Today, July 27). At the time, BP called the move "a portfolio high grading" with exploration and production assets to be sold on the basis that they are worth more to other companies than to BP. BP has previously announced agreements to sell assets in Egypt, Canada and the USA to Apache Corporation for $7 billion and to sell its Colombian exploration, production and transportation business to Talisman and Ecopetrol for $1.9 billion.
