Brazil’s Petrobras launches Gasbel II gas pipeline

Brazilian state-run energy giant Petrobras is to launch the $705 million Rio de Janeiro-Belo Horizonte II gas pipeline on Monday.The 267-km pipeline extension, known as Gasbel II, has the capacity to transport 5 MMcm/d of natural gas to the city of Belo Horizonte north-west of Rio in the state of Minas Gerais, a thriving hub of the mining and steel industrial. The pipeline will deliver gas for power generation as well as for industrial customers.With the addition of the new pipeline, together with the Paulinia-Jacutinga pipeline which was opened in January this year, the volume of gas Minas Gerais receives has quadrupled from 3.15 MMcm/d to 12.9 MMcm/d.The pipeline will be capable of transporting gas imported from Bolivia by pipeline, gas imported as LNG and domestic gas produced from the offshore Santos, Campos and Espirito Santos basins. – JO’C
