South East Asia - LNG PTTEP and PTT may use domestic gas for Thai LNG terminal

Thailand's PTTEP and its parent company PTT, plan to develop a LNG plant sourcing gas supplies from the country's natural gas reserves. PTT are finding it difficult to secure long term contracts, for its planned Map Ta Phut LNG terminal - located on the east coast of Thailand which is scheduled to be operational by 2011 - and could receive up to 5.5 mt of LNG annually. In February, further talks on the 2006 gas agreement between PTT and Iran for supplies from Iran's South Pars field collapsed after failing to reach an agreement on price. The original 2006 agreement was based on receiving 3 mtpa for 20 years, but Iran has failed to deliver due to the current political environment, resulting in stalled exploration and production development. PTT successfully concluded a 10 year contract Qatargas for 1.1mtpa, but the state owned company is still looking to secure LNG supplies from Australia, South Africa, the Middle East and Indonesia.
