European transmission systems could withstand a disruption of Russian gas through Ukraine, industry association Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) said today, claiming a supply interruption could be mitigated by using alternative routes from Russia and boosting imports from other sources including Norway and the global LNG market, which is easing as weather warms in key markets. Brussels- based GIE - which represents the interests of European natural gas infrastructure operators and has 69 member companies from 25 countries – said that members of its Gas Transmission Europe (GTE) grouping had “assessed the supply situation in close co-operation with their national competent authorities and expect that most of the European transmission systems currently can withstand a disruption of Russian gas through Ukraine.”
