The Japanese government has reportedly launched a fresh bid to resolve its dispute with China over natural gas fields in the East China Sea (see Gas Matters Today, February 4). According to local press reports, Japan is proposing that the two countries jointly develop the Kashi (Tianwaitian) and Shirakaba (Chunxiao) fields, two other fields, Asunaro (Longjing), and Kusunoki (Duanqiao) are I dispute. Earlier reports suggested that the Japanese had proposed a different plan, based on a division of profits according to the proximity of the gas fields to China or Japan.
