Fire at Belgian nuclear plant takes reactor offline

Belgian nuclear generation fell on Sunday when local utility Electrabel’s 1 GW Tihange 3 plant went offline owing to an on-site fire, leaving more space for gas-fired plants in the country’s energy mix. The unplanned stop, together with ongoing outages, left only 30% of the country’s installed nuclear capacity available to run from the beginning of this week.
