Sinopec ‘in talks’ to buy 15% Pacific Northwest stake

As the momentum around Canada’s LNG ambitions grows, there are reports that Sinopec is poised to take a 15% stake in Petronas’ Pacific Northwest LNG. The 12 mtpa project is due to begin operations in 2018 and is one of seven plants with export approval (another seven are also proposed) in the western province of British Colombia. The Chinese refining giant is set to get its hands on around 1.8 mtpa of export capacity if it concludes a deal, sources told Reuters. Petronas CEO Shamsul Azhhar Abbas previously confirmed that the company was in talks with an Asian buyer for a 15% stake in a deal that could be completed by the end of March, but did not identify the company specifically.
