CNPC makes largest gas discovery since turn of century

China’s state-owned CNPC today claimed a “major breakthrough” in gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin as it uncovered 308.2 Bcm of technically recoverable reserves, the country’s largest discovery in over a decade. The find would represent enough gas to meet the country’s booming demand outright for two years. China imported 53 Bcm of natural gas in 2013, or 32% of its total consumption, according to CNPC’s research institute.
