Iranian president inaugurates first of two 324 MW CCGT power plants

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday inaugurated the 324 MW Shahid Bastami combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Bastami in the country's Northern Semnan province. Tuesday will also see the commissioning of a second 324 MW CCGT plant, known as the Quds power plant, in the province’s state capital. According to reports by the Iranian Fars news agency, the country has recently made significant investments into its electricity sector. Iran, like many of its neighbouring countries in the Middle East has historically subsidised energy costs for its citizens. In Iran’s case this came about in the aftermath of the Iran-Iraq war of the early 1990s, however these policies have often led to excessive usage – an issue many governments in the region are now trying to tackle.
