Inpex and Shell’s Abadi FLNG cleared an important hurdle on Monday as the Indonesian government granted an environmental permit to the $10 billion project, which saw FEED contracts awarded last year, six years after appraisal of its source field. The environmental and social impact assessment, known as AMDAL, came approximately a month after the country’s presidential elections were held, a period which traditionally delays major decisions on energy projects. “If they [Shell and Inpex] can find the buyers then this approval is probably one of the last serious approvals they need,” one observer told Gas Strategies. No gas sales agreements (GSAs) have yet been signed for the project.
