EAST ASIA - LNG Japanese LNG spot imports rise significantly in January

The prolonged shutdown of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear complex, allied with a fall in hydroelectric power generation is continuing to keep Japanese LNG demand buoyant with a significant rise in spot cargoes from the Atlantic Basin. According to the Japanese ministry of finance the country bought 66.8mt in 2007, a 9.3% year-on-year increase. Moreover, in January 2008, Japan bought 5.95mt of LNG both through long-term contracts and the spot market, including 581,072 mt from Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
