Bulgaria rescinds Chevron’s shale gas permit ahead of drilling ban

Bulgaria has rescinded an exploration permit awarded to Chevron in June 2011 as the government continues to prepare for a potential ban on shale gas drilling amid environmental concerns, according to media reports on Tuesday. The Bulgarian government will still allow Chevron to explore for oil and gas in the north east of the country, but only through conventional drilling, and will only allow hydraulic fracturing – or “fracking” – of shale gas wells when the process is found to be safe.
