UK court fines contractor for poor safety standards

CET Group, of Maidstone, Kent, UK, was fined 20,000 pounds and ordered to pay costs of ￡30,000, at the City of London Magistrates Court on April 25. It followed an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) into an incident when an employee from Witham, Essex, was seriously injured during ground works. Mark Cousins suffered major injuries when he became entangled in a drill being used for a project at Ellenborough Table Tennis Club, Enfield, on March 29,2004. CET pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
