WHEREAS some years ago the extraction of oil from oil sands was inefficient because of the expensive washing-out process, rising oil prices make it increasingly profitable to exploit these deposits. The effect of the worldwide demand for oil is vividly illustrated when visiting the northern region of the Canadian province of Alberta.
