Poland's shale gas industry is currently at an impasse, with the government's recent shale exploration reforms yet to be tested by domestic or international energy companies. The Polish council of ministers approved two draft laws this year, replacing the need for individual licences for exploration, geological surveying and production, and speeding up the initial stages leading to shale resource exploitation. Poland's government also plans to accelerate permitting and limit taxation to 2020, after which the government take should not exceed 40%. But this could be too little, too late. The last 12 months have been disappointing for Poland's unconventional gas industry - once considered Europe's greatest hope for a US-style shale gale. All majors apart from Chevron have departed, with the Polish outlook further dented by the voluntary liquidation of independent explorer 3Legs Resources. But other small independents such as BNK Petroleum and San Leon Energy remain active in the country, and will be largely re ponsible for driving the industry forwards.
