The disease is caused by Salmonella and if not treated properly in some cases would lead to death though most patients recover without treatment. The most common symptoms of Salmonella infection are usually diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. One of the priorities of human and animal health is to develop cross-protective vaccines against Salmonella mainly due to the prevalence of multiple Salmonella strains and the number of cases associated with the disease. Most strains of Salmonella are endemic to large scale farm and management systems and the use of conventional vaccines only confers immunity but is not suitable against multiple strains of the bacteria. Hence better vaccines have to be developed that are effective against a broad spectrum of diseases and offer increased protection against multiple strains of Salmonella.
