Meru (4565 m) is one of the classic free-standing stratovolcanoes of East Africa, and includes a main cone that rises spectacularly from the plains to the north of Arusha, the largest city in northern Tanzania. Meru reports some minor activity despite generally being considered as extinct in much the same way as Kilimanjaro located some 50 km to the north-east. Both volcanoes are Holocene in age; in comparison, the Ngorongoro crater is dated at 15 m BP (millions of years before present).
