IMSG 2010: an overview

The 2nd Annual Meeting of the Igneous and Metamorphic Studies Group was held at Rhodes University in Grahamstown on January 1 8-19th, 2010. This was the follow-up to the first meeting last year in Pretoria. A similar format was followed, wherein the meeting took place over two days, comprising 20 minute talks throughout the day, and with no conference registration fees charged. This year's meeting was very kindly sponsored by the GSSA, whose sponsorship paid for the tea-breaks, the ice-breaker, and the apres-conference buffet, as well as the student prizes. The programme included sessions on Mafic Intrusions ("the Bushveld Complex", "dykes and sills", and "other intrusions"), Isotope Geoscience, Analysis of High Grade Metamorphic Rocks, "Origins of Granitoids", and "Alkaline and Volcanic Rocks", comprising about 32 talks in all. These included two keynote talks, opening the larger sessions, from Hugh Eales overview "Some thoughts on the Bushveld Complex" to John Clemens interesting case study from Australia, "Mount Disappointment: A Puzzling Laccolith".
