Katanga Mining and Nikanor completed a merger to create one of the world's largest copper and cobalt producers worth about 3.,3 billion US dollars. The enlarged Katanga Mining is developing a unified mine complex at Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a target annual output approaching 400 kt of copper and 40 kt of cobalt by 2011. The assets include the kamoto Joint Venture, consisting of the Kamoto underground mine and four open pits, the Kamoto concentrator and the Luilu metallurgical plant, the KOV mine and Kolwezi concentrator. The group is also constructing one of the world's largest solvent extraction and electrowinning plants.
