Brazil: official and academic view on the upcoming round of the WTO agricultural negotiations

The current and potential importance of the agribusiness for the Brazilian balance of trade is indisputable. Table I (Appendix) shows that in spite of the substantial increase in imports from this segment in real terms, exports also responded during the period and the balance of trade continues to show a surplus, attaining nearly US #dollar# 13 billion in 1998. The other economic sectors registered significant reductions in their balance of trade (deficit of US #dollar# 19 billion in 1998). The agribusiness accounts for nearly 40% of Brazilian exports.
