Cycle tourism in east-central Sardinia: exploiting routes through a traditional wine-growing region

After a short summary of the growth and nature of tourism in Sardinia (until recently concentrated along the coast), a description is given of the landscape of the Ogliastra area in Nuoro province, which includes limestone mountains, cork oak forests, Mediterranean maquis vegetation, many caves, and with beaches or cliffs along the east coast of the island. There are rich archaeological remains throughout the area, many dating from the prehistoric era. Agriculture is mainly an extensive agrosilvopastoral system, although there are centres of olive and wine production. Some recommendations are made for development of bicycle leisure tourism routes in the area, centred on the port of Arbatax, and including the construction of stopping places and hotels geared to the needs of cyclists.
