A case of environmental conflict between zootechnical activities and residential housing in agricultural zones.

Details of a legal action initiated in 1997 by two residents to limit the odour emissions and water pollution caused by a nearby pig farm in a rural area in Italy are presented. To prove that the pig farm was registered as residential installation,the owners produced several authorization documents based on regulations existing in 1994, 1995 and 1996. These documents stated that the odour emissions were tolerable under the local environmental and climate conditions, and that the distance of 104 mbetween the pig farm and the residential homes was acceptable in agricultural areas. The outcome of this case illustrates the need to produce more up to date regulations regarding the environmental impact caused by small livestock farms in Italy.
