Tourism...Ecotourism...Geotourism! A case for a new national tourism strategy

In September 2002, the Rio+ 10 - World Summit for Sustainable Development Conference will hosted in Johannesburg. As many as 40 000 to 85 000 visitors to the Johannesburg-Pretoria region are anticipated, and presumably most of them will also want to see a bit of South Africa-beyond conference halls. This event should be a suitable occasion to prompt some reflection on the status and strategies of South Africa's tourism industry and potential. This article aims to stimulate interest in Geotourism amongst the members of the Geological Society of South Africa. Small groups of members dedicated to the promotion of this country's natural heritage already exist and a Geotourism Interest Group has recently been spawned by the GSSA's Conservation and Environment Committee, but it is also hoped that it will result in discussion with tourism organisations on other levels.
