Samples of sporophytes of the endangered pteridophyte Trichomanes speciosum were collected in September 2003 from Saint-Fiacre, Morbihan, France and characterized. Two fronds of T. speciosum were dried, pulverized and extracted with aqueous MeOH. Fractionation of the extract was performed by HPLC. In addition to sucrose, two major components in the extract were isolated. Based on 1D- and 2D-NMR and GC-MS analysis, 1-propene-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, also known as aconitic acid (compound 1), was unambiguously characterized. Compound 2 was unambiguously characterized as dopamine by 1D- and 2D-NMR and corroborated by literature. No flavonoids were detected in sporophytes of T. speciosum. The characterization of aconitic acid allowed the identification of populations of T. speciosum sporophytes with ambiguous morphology in Saint-Nicolas-du-Pelem (France) previously confused with Hymenophyllum tunbrigense..
