Contrary to what is often common practice, dairy heifers should be fed high quality forage and have feed access restricted for a period of the day as ad lib feeding will compromise feed efficiency and raise rearing costs.However, if they are unable to offer this 'limited access' programme with the precision required, producers would be better sticking with their existing ad lib option.
