With increasing numbers of women in surgery, and greater numbers becoming surgical registrars, pregnancy in surgical trainees is something surgical directorates and medical staffing are having to deal with. As one of the first female registrars to present the large district general hospital that I was working at with this 'problem', I found there was little information available on risk assessment of the job and advice on what was safe and acceptable practice. More concerning, however, was the negative feedback I received from my peers. In this article I have tried to highlight some of the evidence and guidelines for safe working practice in surgery.
