Why we need more women in surgery

Although this number of consultant women surgeons may not seem adequate it should be remembered that it is not that long ago when the number of women consultant surgeons was around about 2%! In fact, I well remember appointing two women consultant general surgeons in Oxford in 1991; it was regarded nationally as rather a sensation as there had never been a female general surgeon in Oxford previously! Nevertheless, I would emphasise that we cannot be complacent about the above figures showing that increasing numbers of women are entering surgery compared to a few years ago; we need to ensure that even more women enter surgery.
