After all, Hunter is known to have dissected over 500 species of plants and animals, many preserved among the collection of over 13,000 preparations in his museum. In addition to the thousands of wet and dry specimens illustrating both human and comparative anatomy and pathology, the museum contained over 3,000 specimens of fossils and shells, nearly 1,700 preserved insects and other invertebrates and extensive series of both mounted animal skins and skeletons.
