The European Working Time Directive (EWTD) became law for junior doctors in August 2004.The aim of this study was to survey the views of trainee surgeons on the effect the EWTD has had on training, patient care and quality of life.Method An online survey was run over a period of five weeks (8 December 2004 - 4 January 2005). It was widely advertised throughout College communication networks and was supported by sister royal colleges, trainee associations and the surgical specialist associations.
