Balancing risk and quality

Professor Valerie Lund, as the College's chairman of education, and Mr Peter Lees, director of clinical leadership for the NHS Leadership Centre, chaired the morning and afternoon sessions respectively. Presentations and discussion fell under four main categories:Training versus service Mr Bill Thomas (the College's director of international activities) and Mr Simon Eccles (as medical advisor to the NHS Hospital at Night Project) listed factors impacting on training in the UK at the present time, including:the European Working Time Directive(EWTD)>the Modernising Medical Careers proposal>the new consultant contract>the shift system of rotas/issues around continuity of care service activity targets NCEPOD restrictions advent of independent sector treatment centres
