Studies have consistently shown that postmortem examination after surgery can show a significant rate of discrepant diagnoses.This information should lead to improvements in surgical care. However, the number of autopsies performed is declining.34 Possible explanations for this include increasing confidence in new diagnostic modalities, doctors' discomfort to obtain consent from recently bereaved relatives, doubts over the value of the procedure and recent organ retention issues.
