ZF unveils dual electric motors for low-floor buses - New hybrid drive system available as standard equipment in 2010

ZF Transmissions presented its concept for a new serial hybrid drive for city buses at the 2008 IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hannover, Germany in September. This system, which is still under development, features two electric motors integrated into the axle that recapture energy during braking. In the ZF concept a high-speed asynchronous motor with a downstream two-stage ratio drives each wheel. It does not change gears due to the fixed ratio, which ZF says contributes to the increased driving comfort. Short-term, maximum drive power of 240kW and continuous power of 120kW is available per axle.
