In this article I offer a strongly held, personal view as to the importance of an 'exit' examination for surgical trainees. Since 1997 it has been mandatory that such a test should be successfully negotiated in order that those completing an approved training programme can be considered eligible for a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and have access to the specialist register.
