The goal of this issue of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Clinics of North America is devoted to gastrointestinal motility and neurogastroenterology to update the busy gastroenterologist/endoscopist on what is new and clinically applicable to their patient care needs and on what can be incorporated into daily clinical challenges. Beginning with the esophagus, Drs. Vaezi and Hong emphasize the importance of not only acid pH monitoring with catheter or Bravo techniques but also the evolving role of esophageal impedance, particularly as a preoperative evaluation when considering Nissen fundoplication measurements. Dr. Fass discusses functional heartburn, which is always challenging and an extremely common aspect of our practice. Finally, a card-carrying esophageal surgeon, Dr. Smith, discusses where we stand today on the indications and results of well-done surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease.
