Risks of oral sodium phosphate for precolonoscopy bowel preparation in children.

Recently, 2 consensus documents, one from the U.S.1 and' one from Canada,2 were published regarding bowei deans ing for colonoscopy. In both, by far the most attention was devoted to issues regarding adults, although recommendations for pediatrics were included, and in the case of the U S document, these were authored by Dr Thom Lobe, a co-author of this letter. It appears that the main intent of the consensus papers was not to offer comprehensive analysis' regarding pediatric issues as much as to bring attention to the fact that children require special considerations. To that end, various bowel cleansing regimens used in practice by pediatric gastroenterologists were described. However we feel that the consensus papers drew insufficient attention to important safety issues regarding the use of sodium phosphate (NaP) in the pediatric population.
