Hemodynamically significant upper-GI bleeding after hemoclip application.

Upper-GI (UGI) bleeding is a common medical emergency that carries an in-hospital mortality rate of greater than 10%, which has not changed in the past decade. Among the available methods for controlling acute UGI bleeding, the hemoclip has emerged as a promising and favorable technique. To date, hemoclips have proved safe and effective, with hemostasis rates as high as 100%. There have been no reports of hemoclips applied to normal mucosa that result in an endoscopically visible lesion to which significant UGI bleeding may be attributed. We report the first known case of a hemoclip applied to normal mucosa causing a hemodynamically significant UGI bleed.
