Esophageal web resolved by endoscopic incision in a patient with Plummer-Vinson syndrome.

A 47-year-old woman was seen with an approximately 20-year history of dysphagia that had been worsening for 3 years. Dysphagia was experienced when swallowing solids, but not liquids. She had experienced no weight loss. On admission, laboratory data showed iron deficiency anemia (hemoglobin and hematocrit: 8.8 g/dL and 30.7%, respectively [normal 12.1-15.1 g/dL and 37%-51%, respectively]); the serum iron, iron binding capacity, and ferritin values were 16 mug/dL, 509 mug/dL, and 1.5 ng/mL, respectively (normal 65-175 mg/dL, 250-450 mg/dL, and 30-300 ng/mL, respectively). On EGD, an esophageal web was observed in the upper esophagus near the upper esophageal sphincter (A).
