Intestinal pseudo-obstruction as the initial presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus: the need for enteroscopic evaluation.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, with "a variety of presenting features and manifestations, SLE can involve any part of the GI tract. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO) is a recently recognized manifestation of SLE.1" IPO commonly occurs in conjunction with urologic complications, including ureterohydronephrosis and/or interstitial cystitis.7 The diagnosis of IPO is made whenthe clinical features of intestinal obstruction are present without an identifiable organic obstructive lesion. Laparotomyusually is necessary to rule out organic small-intestinal obstruction.
