Occlusion of metallic biliary stent related to nickel allergy.

Treatment of a benign biliary obstruction with metallic endobiliary stents is controversial. There are few long-term data on the patency of these stents.1 Generally, metallic stents have not been used in patients with a life expectancy of > 2 years. The stents are made with alloys from a variety of metals. We report a case where we believe that an allergic reaction to the metal of the stent contributed to the patient's symptoms and, perhaps, to stent occlusion.
