Somatoform disorder after conscious sedation

The following is the first report in the gastroenterology literature of somatoform disorder causing prolonged somnolence after conscious sedation, an important complication for endoscopists to understand. A 44-year-old female with multiple psychiatric disorders who was on buproprion and propranolol had an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for dyspepsia, and a history of a normal, uncomplicated EGD two years prior. Her repeat EGD showed normal results and was well tolerated without agitation, hypoxia, or hypotension. She was stable on transfer to recovery after receiving 4 mg midazolam and 125 mg fentanyl.
