Fellow abroad!

Leaving one's own country to increase one's medical knowledge has been a constant practice since the ancient times of Hippocrates and Galen. Even more current researchers, such as the 2005 Nobel Prize recipient, Barry Marshall, and the more recent Rudolf V Schindler Award recipient, David Carr-Locke, have traveled abroad for the purposes of gaining more in-depth and diverse medical training. The biographies of many remarkable physicians incSude visits to foreign institutions during or after their medical training at home. Although images and videos have become a helpfui tool in endoscopy education, personal onsite training is still the basis of excellence in medical instruction. Recent advances in GI subspecialties have impelled many fellows, particularly those pursuing an academic career, to complete their training through a complementary period of time focused in a specific disease or endoscopic technique. Sometimes these prominent and more experienced groups that offer such training are located in overseas medical centers, and so the possibility of becoming a foreign visiting fellow becomes very real.
