The need for measuring intravariceal pressure cannot be overemphasized. Not only is intravariceal pressure the best parameter for predicting rupture of varices and consequent complications, but it is also a useful guide for studying the effect of pharmacotherapy of portal hypertension and a measure of the effects of transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunting.
