Grant writing and academic survival: what the fellow needs to know.

Academic medicine is a complex, multidimensional enterprise that offers many different pathways by which to construct and to define a career. Academic advancement within this broad construct can be achieved by building a portfolio of accomplishments that include clinical excellence, teaching activities, and research. The relative importance of each will vary from institution to institution and, within each institution, may vary depending on whether the individual is primarily assigned to a clinical or an investigator track. Nevertheless, the ability to articulate an idea and to solicit support for a proposal is a key survival skill in academic medicine. Furthermore, success in attracting support, whether extramural or intramural, is a key surrogate by which your ability to develop an area of expertise will be measured. In short, grant support is a universal currency of academic success. In the following paragraphs, I will outline some guidelines and tips that may be helpful in planning grant applications.
