NATIONAL UNIFIED OPERATIONAL PREDICTION CAPABILITY INITIATIVE

The National Unified Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC) is a partnership between the Department of Defense [U.S. Air Force (USAF) Weather and the Oceanographer of the U.S. Navy] and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA; National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Science and Technology] to accelerate U.S. numerical weather prediction (NWP) capability. The initial collaboration includes a unified global atmospheric ensemble prediction system, common software architecture and standards to increase interoperability between operational NWP systems and accelerate the transition of new technology, and a coordinated NWP research and development program. This effort was officially initiated in October2007 and entered the implementation phase in October 2009. The National Unified Ensemble (NUE) became operational on 18 January 2011 [the NUOPC Initial Operational Capability (IOC)].
