Three of the most popular and versatile summer climbers are clematis, jasmine and honeysuckle. Geoff Stebbings takes his pick of the best. There are clematis for every situation and you can hve them in flower almost every month of the year. The early-flowering Clematis montana is easy to grow and vigorous, and excellent for covering a large space quickly. Early summer types, such as 'Nelly Moser', are less invasive and have the biggest flowers, while late-floweringtypes have smaller flowers, but makea spectacular show from August onwards and are the easiest to grow. Most clematis dkslike baking heat, so plant them with their roots on the shady side of a shrub. If planting th climb up a tree or shrub, plant at the edge of the branch canopy, not by the trunk where the soil is dry. The thrive in rich soil, so mulch and feed well.
