摘要

AMONG THE CURRENT GENERATION OF GARDEN DESIGNERS, there are, without doubt, several whose work will be talked about for years to come. Few of these leading lights will be able to look back on their careers, however, and claim to have had as much influence on the profession as John Brookes. Indeed, when John started out, garden design wasn't considered to be a 'profession' at all. After the war, design efforts were concentrated on new towns, roads, power stations, and it wasn't until the 1960s that anyone began to give much thought to employing a designer for domestic garden projects again. When they did, John was in a good position to embrace the opportunity, and his ideas - linking gardens to art and to architecture - helped to revolutionise garden design.
