Herbs for a dry garden

Herbs are more versatile than many people think. In his book Gardening with Herbs, John Stevens shows how suited they are to difficult sites. Herbs native to dry, stony or rocky areas (such as the Mediterranean) can be grown in parts of the garden where the open, sunny conditions and well-drained soil in which they thrive are present. These natural conditions can also be re-created in the form of rock gardens, scree, and raised or gravel beds. Many fragrant and culinary herbs originate from these habitats and there is a wide range of suitable herbs from which to make a selection.
