Anne de Verteuil begins a new series of interviews with Fellows of the Society of Garden Designers by sounding out Robin Williams, FSGD. ACCOrding tO Robin Williams he's officially retired, although he instantly qualifies this by admitting that, in practice, it may be a while before current projects are completed and he can finally hang up his drawing board (or whatever it is that retired designers hang up). Williams' career as a garden designer has spanned a period of 40 years and he has seen many changes in the industry, some positive, others less so. He started out as a landscape contractor in the 1960s, then became Director of Fonthill Nurseries and Scotts in Bristol, where his growing interest in design brought about a change of direction. He moved on to become chief garden designer at Jackman's Nurseries in Woking, Surrey and remained there until 1978 when he set up his own garden and landscape design practice. The practice is international and Williams has worked in Europe, USA, Japan, South East Asia, Russia and the Ukraine and has since been in partnership with his son, Robin Templar Williams.
