Solid Energy Launches Underground Coal-Gasification Pilot Testing

New Zealand-based Solid Energy announced April 16 thatit started-up a NZ$22-million (US$18-million) undergroundcoal-gasification (UCG) pilot plant near Huntly in theWaikato coal fields.“The plant is now producing synthetic gas from coal,” ac-cording to Solid Energy, adding that it “believes it is the firstin the world to access energy from a single coal field usingfour different technologies: underground mining, opencastmining, coal seam gas (CSG) and underground coal gasifica-tion (UCG).”
